Shocker: GDPR helps the big guy, hurts the small ones the most

Well, who could have guessed?!

Let’s explain what we mean… WhoTracksMe had a look at the cookie tracking landscape post-GDPR.

They made a very detailed report, looking on EU vs the US in terms of tracking cookies prevalence, the category of websites, and how things changed since GDPR.

Overall, as expected, tracking cookies are less widespread in Europe, by about 4%. In the US, the reach has however increased by about 8%. Fewer rules, more reach.

OK, so here’s the chart that really tells the story of how much the small ad companies get hit.

While the presence of tracking cookies dropped 4% in the EU, Google increased its reach by 1%. Sure, doesn’t sound like much but check the rest.

Facebook dropped 6.66%, probably greatly affected by the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Then all the other smaller ad tech vendors have been hammered.

So, dear lawmakers, tell us again how this is to “reign in” the big companies like Google and Facebook?

Delivery – Do you trust your chosen delivery company?

There’s only so much you can control when you build your e-commerce store. And the brand alongside it.

The reality is, customers are pretty spoiled by giants like Amazon who have managed to build their own high quality and reliable infrastructure.

You, as not-Amazon, will have to work with partners when it comes to delivery. They will probably not be as fast and as good as Amazon. Sometimes they can even be completely awful.

We’ve had some own experience here, and we also looked around the web for some more examples. This article about the South African Post Office is actually what made us think about this topic.

To make it short, the post office has an absolutely awful service with a 100% failure rate to deliver what was promised.

Why do we bring it up? Because we had a similar experience when using the post office services in Austria, USA, Philippines, Mexico and Canada. The success rate for on time and without a ruined package was 0%.

So, if you’re dropshipping and using national post office services, you are already shooting yourself in the foot. At least in our experience.

State-owned or controlled companies that don’t have any risk seem to under-deliver. And by a big margin.

Just yesterday we looked at what people care about when deciding to buy from you again – and having fast free (or at least cheap) delivery, that brings their desired product ranks very high.

Although the post office might be cheaper for your business initially, your customers will get what you pay for…


Affected by the FB hack? Your account might be for sale on the dark web.

Last week we talked about a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted the “View As” feature and made it possible for hackers to steal access tokens, digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook.

Facebook said that “People’s privacy and security is incredibly important, and we’re sorry this happened.” followed by “There is no evidence that people have to take action such as changing their passwords or deleting their profiles”.

Now dozens of listings of hacked Facebook accounts showed up on the dark web. Prices range from $3 to $12, which would mean if all the 50 million accounts would be hacked the value of all these accounts would be somewhere between $150 million and $600 million.

Exploited by criminals the data could be used to commit identity theft or blackmail Facebook users with compromising information.

If you found yourself logged out of Facebook last Friday and didn’t change your password yet, now is the time to do so!

Under the EU’s GDPR Facebook could be liable for fines of up to $1.63 billion – 4 percent of its annual global revenue if the company did not do enough to protect the security of its users.

Well, having 50 million hacked accounts sounds a bit like that to us, we’re not sure if another sorry will do the job here.

IG finally has app based 2-factor-authentication

So far Instagram only offered SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA), which is vulnerable to SIM hijacking attacks but still better than nothing.

Now Instagram implemented an app-based 2FA that generates a code to prove the authenticity of the account holder’s identity.

To enable the app-based 2FA you need to navigate to the Settings menu, scroll down into the Privacy and Security section and select Two-Factor Authentication. Instagram then will either detect existing authentication apps on your device or ask you to download one.

What makes an affiliate network ACTUALLY outstanding? – Part 1

We definitely live in a time where over half of the affiliate networks people discover say they have only exclusives, only the highest payouts, the highest EPCs, etc.

The EU will examine every single ICO to decide on regulation

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has its work cut out.They plan on looking at every single ICO to decide what the appropriate regulation is.

Steven Maijoor, the ESMA Chairman, said that they expect to report on this by the end of the year.

And that makes us think they won’t look at every single ICO, at least not in great detail. Because there were certainly thousands of ICO is the past couple of years.

Is this good or bad? Might be bad for some people who thought they are operating outside the law and evaded some taxes, scammed some investors.

On the other hand, it should be good for the long-term trust in ICOs and cryptocurrencies in general.
