Doing pre-launches for quicker, more efficient business idea testing
It’s never been easier to start your own biz than it is nowadays. There are tons of free tools available, communities you can learn from and, of course, this newsletter that brings you everything you need to know about the marketing side of things on a daily basis!
However, all these resources don’t automatically lead to success. You need to know how to use them as well.
For example, if you set off trying to build the perfect product or service before launching it… Well, you’ve just perfected something that is unproven.
That’s where the concept of pre-launches comes into play.
The idea is simple: You test your positioning and your marketing message before even creating the product.
Doing a pre-launch the right way takes some practice. It’s a trial and error process, but the folks at Shopify has written a full guide on how you can do it.
Sure, their guide is focused specifically on using Shopify, but the principles and concepts apply to any product, even if you’re not doing e-commerce.
Fun fact: We also did a pre-launch for this newsletter.
We wouldn’t have sent this out every single day for almost 18 months unless that pre-launch showed us we were onto something!
As you can imagine, we’re big advocates of testing business ideas with pre-launches, especially when it’s related to physical products!
Just think about how many concepts you can test without ever ordering a product or building out the actual service?
Will this make your small-parcel shipping rates skyrocket?
“…a rate increase of at least 300 percent on postal parcel traffic to the U.S. from heavy net exporting countries”
That’s the juice of this post, but let’s take a look at what’s going on.
To keep it short, the U.S. Postal Service will leave the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on October 17.
USPS will end 144 years of U.S. involvement in the international body that governs the exchange of mail and postal parcels between countries. This has the potential to fundamentally change the landscape of global air shipping.
Why is this happening? Apparently, it’s Trump’s decision. The President telegraphed the departure in an August 2018 memorandum, saying that certain “current international postal practices in the UPU do not align with United States economic and national security interests.”
This is just a small summary of what Trump said. We invite you to read the full article to dive deeper into the reasons.
So, in a meeting on September 25 and 26, the U.S. will submit a proposal to the UPU that would allow the U.S. to “self-declare” international postage pricing and to decide on subsidy levels.
Unless the UPU agrees to the proposal, USPS will leave the United Postal Union.
What will happen? Shipping rates could rise by up to 300% due to the U.S. having to deal with each country separately.
Private carriers could take advantage of this and limit the rise of shipping rates. Hopefully.
Do not worry for the holiday season: If the USPS leaves the United Postal Union, changes won’t take effect until 2020.
So, at least you can have a smooth Q4.

Yeah! In case you didn’t know, FB officially launched its dating service in the US yesterday:
Facebook Dating makes it easier to find love through what you like — helping you start meaningful relationships through things you have in common, such as interests, events and groups.
In other words, they’ll use the same data that marketers leverage to find that good traffic to find you your better half! So, you’re sure to find your fiancé…
It will look like Tinder, more or less, letting you decide whether you like someone or not based on a basic profile. It will integrate with Instagram as well, and you’ll be able to use Events and Groups you’re in to find people with similar interests.

What’s the catch for marketers? Well, we know Facebook, and Facebook Dating could represent new ad slots. Not only that, but this new feature is likely to entice users to spend more time on the social network. That’s great for us all!
So, more engagement and more media space to buy. Now that’s a real match! *wink wink*

In addition to its Facebook Dating, there is a new layout being rolled out on desktops.
The new layout aims to make it easier to navigate to your favourite elements, with tabs along the top of the screen and a more compressed view.

High-Converting 1-Minute Video Ad Framework
It’s relatively easy to make a video these days… There are affordable tools out there, and you can also just whip out your phone, turn on the camera and the quality will be more than good enough.
But here’s the kicker: It’s not just about how the video looks, it’s also about what the video is saying. Creating consistently appealing videos is tough, especially when you usually only have 3-5 seconds to catch someone’s attention before they skip or scroll past your ad.
That’s why this post by Mark William in the Facebook Ads Experts Academy is so useful. It puts together a proven framework for video ads.
First, you have to think of your video in terms of 4 separate components:
- Hook – opener/attention grabber.
- Agitate – ask a question/show transformation/identify problem.
- Solution – what you are offering.
- Call to Action – what you want your audience to do.
+ Hook (First 3 seconds): This should be short, simple and attention grabbing. Don’t open with an introduction of who you are and a logo, because this isn’t about you. It’s about the user. Open with a story and use a phrase like “when I was…”, ”I have bad news…” or ask a controversial question.
+ Agitation (Next 10-15 seconds): Build up emotion and transition to the problem.
- What is your audience’s problem?
- State the problem clearly and concisely, using market language. What have they been asking on forums, social media, etc.?
- Talk about pain, pleasure and/or excitement to stir up emotion.
+ Solution (Next 20-25 seconds): Paint a picture of the solution.
- Tell them what the solution is.
- Explains how and why it works.
- Describe how it will change their lives.
+ Call to action, aka CTA (last few seconds of the video)
- What action do you want viewers to take?
- In what stage of the funnel are they? Should you go for a harder or softer CTA?
- What should they expect after clicking your ad?

Obviously it’s not exactly like Google,… But we can say that Amazon is pretty much “the e-commerce search engine”.
In fact, 54% of product searches take place on Amazon. So you could say it is the world’s largest e-commerce search engine.
That’s why building a business on Amazon is still a very viable option, and understanding Amazon SEO is incredibly important.
Now, we have some good news and some bad news.
We’ll start with the bad news: It’s not exactly like Google. It serves a different purpose, has a different algorithm, different signals, and a different type of content.

Some important changes coming that you should know about!

Study to become a professional “pothead”
If you thought you could find a job smoking pot, well… sorry to break it to you but that’s not what we’re talking about here.
It’s actually more serious than the headline lets on. The University of Guelph in Canada is offering an online cannabis cultivation course as part of its horticulture program.
In other words, you can learn the ins and outs of growing pot! The market is booming in Canada right now, and people who actually know what they are doing (trained professionals) are in high demand.
Before you think about jumping onto the course, we have to tell you it’s already full! But there is a waiting list you can sign up for right here.
You can expect more and more universities in Canada to start offering both regular courses and online ones when it comes to cannabis, so don’t worry if you can’t sign up for this one 😉
