💧 Watermarks.

💧 Watermarks.

Good morning.

In a world where organic reach is dead… one marketer dares to open a spreadsheet.

That’s how the trailer starts. Yep, we’ve been workshopping it all morning, because we just realized there are no movies about digital marketers. None. Not one.

Picture the climax: our hero whispers “the pixel fired” as the room erupts. Somebody get us a studio deal… no?

AI MARKETING

Claude now watermarks its own writing, and ChatGPT ads underdeliver

Your ghostwriter just started signing its work in a way that you don’t even see.e

Invisible ink, but for LLMs: Anthropic is embedding machine-readable marks in Claude output, per the EU AI Act transparency code.

Two techniques: A text gets an imperceptible watermark woven into the words, so it survives copy-paste and some editing; while generated files like .png and .svg get signed C2PA provenance metadata.

Models launched from August 2 support it at launch, across the API, Claude Code, Cowork, and Tag, worldwide. Older models are being retrofitted.

Here’s the part people keep getting wrong: The mark exists in text Claude generates, not in everything Claude reads.

Ask it to review a doc and get notes back? Your file stays clean. Ask it to rewrite the doc? That output is marked.

And a hit isn’t a confession. Anthropic says detection only signals content may have been processed by Claude, which covers translating or summarizing someone else’s work.

Absence proves less still. Short passages, heavy paraphrasing, format conversion, and screenshots all break the signal. Just saying.

Everyone else is on the same page: Google already watermarks Gemini text with SynthID, and C2PA metadata is common across OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft image output. Same code, same deadline.

Meanwhile, OpenAI’s ad product is still finding its feet. A 50,006-prompt study found:

  • Ads on 25.94% of commercial prompts, but 14.35% land on an unrelated topic.
  • 96.37% of advertisers aren’t cited in the answer sitting above their own ad.
  • Only Free and Go users see ads, so your B2B buyer probably doesn’t.
  • No licensing deal needed to sit in OpenAI’s index, which stores your title plus roughly 200 characters.

Plus, the company’s partnership with Yelp kicked off with Reservations and Waitlist that now complete bookings inside the chat.

Finally, it seems like smaller budgets are the next target for ChatGPT as six live job postings point to a dedicated SMB ads unit, staffed by poaching from Meta, Google, and TikTok.

Despite current underperformance, it seems like OpenAI is determined to make ads work…

GOOGLE

Gemini hits a billion users, French publishers ask to get paid for AI Overviews, and Google Ads learns to interpret itself

Google is winning the AI land grab and getting reported to a regulator for it. In the same 24 hours.

One billion, with an asterisk: Sundar Pichai says Gemini has reached 1B monthly active users, faster than any Google product before it.

That counts only people opening the app or site, not Gemini inside Gmail or Search.

The caveat: Nearly every Android ships with it, and the promised Gemini 3.5 Pro still hasn’t arrived. The 100M+ iOS users are the more honest signal, since they had to choose it.

Nearly 300 newspapers are less impressed: A French publisher federation has filed a complaint with the country’s competition authority over AI Overviews, which launched in France in late July.

They’re not asking Google to stop. They want to get paid whenever their articles get summarised into an AI Overview. Google was already fined €250M in 2024 over the same 2022 agreement.

Meanwhile, your dashboards started talking: Ask Advisor is going agentic across Ads and Analytics.

Expect homepage summaries of what changed since you last logged in, natural-language questions about competitor impression share, and dashboards built from text prompts.

Two smaller ones worth your attention:

  • Google is testing a list of advertiser favicons and domains above the mobile sponsored block. Good for known brands, harder for everyone else.
  • A new Campaign Data Import Validation Report flags imported non-Google data missing cost, clicks, or impressions.

That’s it from Google. For now.

AIO

Your best-ranking page might be your least valuable one

Imagine ranking number one for “how to fix a leaky faucet.” You see green arrows in the report. But your phone never rings. Ouch.

That’s the trap Goran Mirkovic lays out over at WordStream, and it’s most likely a keyword problem.

Why? Because AI didn’t take your traffic. It took your job.

When AI Overviews show up, organic click-through can fall by more than 60%. Over 80% of searches now end without a click at all.

Your content is being demoted to source material.

So what can you do? Realize that not every keyword got hit equally.

Three tiers.

  • Tier 1 is informational, like “what is a dental crown” and it’s fully resolved on the page.
  • Tier 2 is a comparison, like “crown vs. veneer” and it’s summed up, but not settled.
  • Tier 3 is local and transactional, for example “dental crown cost Chicago”, and this is where somebody still has to pick up a phone.

Most brands are still pouring budget into Tier 1 because it used to build traffic. Now it builds chatbot impressions.

Do an audit to answer this uncomfortable question. Pull your traffic from Google Search Console, then search each keyword manually as a customer would. Would you need to click anything?

If not, that keyword’s been claimed.

Wording changes everything. “Dental crown cost” can still push someone to book.

“Average dental crown cost” gets answered by a single price range. Group them together and you’ll misjudge both.

Do the math on leads, not visits. One keyword: 1,200 visits, zero leads. Another: 90 visits, 14 leads. If your reporting can’t tell those two apart, your reporting is the problem.

Earning the Tier 2 click takes actual work: AI already handles the first layer with the options, the definitions, the neutral overview. If your page does the same thing, there’s no reason to open it.

Narrow the problem. Add real constraints. Show numbers. Make the decision easier, not just better informed.

Fewer keywords, better aligned with what actually pays.

Client asking about declining traffic? 42% of agencies are fielding the same question

42% of agencies are fielding questions about declining organic traffic, but only 6% say it’s the metric their clients care most about.

Traffic is the symptom clients can see. What they’re asking for now is AI search visibility, the top new service request of 2026.

DATA STORIES

Marketplaces are search engines too, just for products

The search begins before the credit card comes out.

But where do people actually start? Well, the Googles of the world have some very stiff competition in the form of massive digital bazaars.

  • 37% of shoppers start their journey on online marketplaces like Amazon, making them the top starting point.
  • Search engines follow at 23%, showing that while intent starts with a query, it often skips the general web for a direct product shelf.
  • Social & Brand: Brand websites (11%) and social media (9%) lag behind, showing that these are better for discovery than for direct, high-intent searches.

Marketplaces are like sear Consumers crave the convenience of reviews, shipping, and variety in one place.

Focus on marketplace optimization besides Google so you don’t miss the front door.

Better said, prioritize marketplace SEO. Ensure your product titles and descriptions on sites like Amazon are optimized for the specific way users search within those ecosystems.

ROUNDING UP THE STACK

AI MARKETING: This daily newsletter condenses the latest and greatest AI developments into a 5-minute read. They read the noise, pull out the signal, and explain what actually matters for work, strategy, and the tools your team is already using. Trusted by 700k+ readers. Subscribe right here.*

YOUTUBE: First major Partner Program overhaul since 2018 lands February 1, 2027. Shorts ad revenue sharing now demands 10 million qualified views per 90 days. Creators below will chase brand deals and Shopping bonuses instead. It’s getting harder to monetize if you’re smaller…

META: Exclusion-only custom audiences are here. Customer lists that can only omit people, never include them, with no way to convert them back later. Handy for opt-outs, employees, or anyone you’re legally barred from targeting. Nice. No more accidental budget-burning.

NETFLIX: Upfront wrapped with ad commitments nearly doubled, tracking toward $3 billion this year. The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is effectively gone, with sponsorships sold out, and in-game inventory close behind. Good signal for the ad economy?

SPOTIFY: A new Skip Ahead button lets some Premium subscribers jump past podcast ads, but only ones not sold directly by the platform. Translation? Your direct-sold host-read buys get skipped while in-house inventory stays untouchable. It’s still a limited test, and networks are already pushing back hard.

GOOGLE: Merchant Center has been throwing errors since August 6, and there’s still no word on root cause, affected features, or a fixed timeline. If your Shopping, Performance Max, or free listings look off this week, check the status page before you try to rebuild feeds that didn’t break.

REDDIT: Half of US shoppers verify AI recommendations on the platform before buying, per its own Path to Purchase study, with more than 1 in 3 doing so in the UK. First-party data, so add a pinch of salt to it. But we know scepticism for AI recommendations is real.
