Base Rate Neglect
Why people ignore statistical averages when they hear a vivid specific story and how to use base rate neglect in marketing.

Happy Thursday.
We counted seven “thought leaders” in our feed before finishing coffee this morning. We’re still recovering. Today’s newsletter, mercifully, contains zero of them. Just science.

Social proof beats persuasion. A real person holding your product converts faster than any ad you will write.

Stack Influence operationalizes that.
They match brands like Martha Stewart and Unilever with vetted micro-influencers who purchase on Amazon and post authentic UGC – triggering the bandwagon effect at scale.
Brands have hit #1 page rank and 13X monthly revenue.
No upfront creator fees. Save 10% this week.
A friend tells you about their cousin who got rich on crypto.
You ignore the 99% of people who lost money. You buy in. Sounds familiar?
That’s Base Rate Neglect in action. It’s our brain’s tendency to ignore statistical reality when faced with a vivid, specific story.
We overweight the case in front of us and underweight the average outcome.
Kahneman and Tversky documented this all the way in 1973 in “On the psychology of prediction.”
The research: Participants consistently judged probabilities based on stereotypes and individual descriptions, even when given clear statistical base rates.
The vivid beats the statistical. Every time.
We fear plane crashes after seeing one on the news, despite cars killing far more people. We invest in startups after one IPO success story, despite the 90% failure rate.
Marketers figured out long ago that humans don’t make decisions based on probability. We make them based on stories.
Which means if you’re trying to convince skeptical customers, statistics about your “average user” won’t move them. A specific, vivid transformation will. Here’s how to put this to work.
Three ways to leverage Base Rate Neglect
Lead with hero transformations that beat skepticism
Noom’s marketing leans on named, specific success stories: Cindy lost 44lbs, Matt lost 75lbs, Carla hit 100lbs. Each gets a face, a backstory, a quote.

The featured outliers do the persuasion work.
Prospects mentally anchor to the dramatic case, not the median outcome.
Build a wall of named, specific transformations. The base rate becomes statistically irrelevant the moment a customer pictures themselves as the next Cindy.
Create an elite winners’ program that becomes the brand’s defining narrative
ClickFunnels’ Two Comma Club celebrates users who generate over $1 million through a single sales funnel.
Members get an award, public recognition, and case study features.
The base rate of ClickFunnels users hitting $1M is tiny. But the program defines the brand’s mythology. Every prospect quietly imagines themselves in the winners’ circle.

Build a public hall of fame with stakes, recognition, and visibility. The outliers become the marketing. The math becomes irrelevant.
Use aggregate stats
Klaviyo brags that its platform powered “over $250 billion in Klaviyo Attributed Value” across its customer base in 2023. The number is enormous, specific, and impressive.

But it tells you nothing about what a single new customer will earn.
The aggregate stat overshadows the question of individual outcomes, and prospects mentally hitch onto the big number.

META:Facebook launched Forum, a standalone app that resembles conversational message boards like Reddit, with integrated AI search that lets users pull answers from every group they’re in at once. A competitor? Or a method to scrap data for its LLMs? You tell us.
YOUTUBE: Gen Z are no longer asking their Mom. They ask YouTube. And so does everyone else: 2.58B people use the platform every month, and a surprising number of them are shopping. This article reveals other intriguing data about the popular platform, so check it out.
GOOGLE: Google’s AI Mode has reached 1B monthly users and is already live across multiple countries and languages. International audiences are already searching this way; the rollout just made it official. But you’ll definitely have an easier time reaching overseas audiences now.
OPENAI: A pay-per-action model and ad pixel tracking are coming to ChatGPT, with conversion-focused formats aimed at small businesses like dry cleaners and appointment services. This puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google and Meta for budgets.
