🧠 Attribute Substitution.

FROM THE CREW

Happy Thursday.

Have you ever wanted to make a newsletter like ours but for your own product or service?

Well, we might have something in-store for you.

Fill in this 3-minute survey to see what we’re planning and to be first in line when we launch.

SPONSORED BY 90 PERCENT

What if doing nothing beat 90% of professional fund managers?

The investment industry sells complexity. Research. Timing. Alpha.

The data tells a different story. Over any 20-year period, a simple world index fund has outperformed more than 90% of professionals. Most investors who try to beat the market end up paying more in fees to underperform it.

The edge isn’t intelligence. It’s patience.

But patience is hard when your portfolio feels abstract. A passive fund is just a ticker on a screen. The thousands of companies inside it, the businesses you actually co-own, stay invisible.

90 Percent fixes that. Every week, it pulls one company at random from the world equity index and tells you what it actually does.

  • The Brazilian company that makes the electric motors inside almost everything that spins.
  • The Florida company that sells your airline its spare parts at half the price.
  • The Japanese hardware company hiding inside every factory.

One company. Every week. Yours to discover.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT

Attribute Substitution

You’ve never heard of the wine. It costs €40. Based on the price, you decide it’s good.

Congratulations—you answered a question nobody asked.

Quality is hard to judge. The price isn’t. So your brain swaps one for the other.

Researchers call this Attribute Substitution. Kahneman and Frederick formalised it in 2002: when the target attribute is hard to access, an easier one nearby gets assessed instead.

Science claims it happens unnoticed. Students were asked how happy they were with life, and how many dates they’d had that month.

  • Happiness question first? The answers barely correlated.
  • Dating question first? Correlation hit 0.66.

Nobody meant to grade their whole life on their love life, yet everybody did. And who can blame them?

Attribute Substitution is everywhere. A packed restaurant means good food, for example.

Buyers can’t evaluate your product before buying it, so they evaluate something else. You pick what.

Three ways to leverage Attribute Substitution

1) Engineer the proxy that they can feel

Nobody assesses side-impact structure in a showroom. They shut the door and listen.

Carmakers learned this the hard way. Safety rules added reinforcement bars, and the old solid thud vanished.

Mercedes-Benz now runs a sound quality department. Its manager says the sound comes from door structure, latches and seals, not weight.

Psychoacoustics research finds tinny closes read as cheap.

Our take: find the one sensory moment where buyers reach a verdict, then over-build it.

Unboxing heft. Load time. The click of a lid. That’s your car door.

2) Answer the easy question with your name

Shoppers can’t measure butterfat at the freezer door, duh. But they can read a label and guess where it came from.

So Reuben and Rose Mattus gave their Bronx ice cream a fake Danish name, an unused umlaut, and a map of Denmark on the carton.

Denmark meant dairy. Dairy meant rich. The word means nothing, in any language.

The tactic has a name now: foreign branding. And it justified a premium price.

The play: your name, packaging and origin story “taste” the product before anyone else does. Audit them.

3) Build a reference for them

Every category has a question buyers can’t answer alone. Too many variables, decision needed by breakfast.

In this case, you hand them one number and they’ll use it.

Oura sells that lesson. Heart rate variability, temperature, sleep, yesterday’s training — collapsed into a Readiness Score, 0 to 100.

85 and up means go. Under 70 means ease off. Perfect 100s are rare by design.

The exact weighting isn’t published. Nobody asks. Why would they? That’s how well the substitution works.

Do this: find the calculation your customer avoids, run it, and ship the answer as one number.

AI vs human Social Media Managers. 7 Instagram accounts. Find out who won

Can AI run your social media better than a human? Planable tested this out.

They gave the same fictional chocolate brand to 7 Instagram accounts, some run by human social media managers, some run by AI.

After the experiment ended, 4 experts rated the content, and 3 of them mistook an AI account for human at least once.

Here’s what they found.

CLICKWORTHY

INSTAGRAM: Reels now absorbs 51% of US time spent on the app and over half its ad placements, per Sensor Tower, while ads per session rose 8% year over year. Downloads fell 5%. Growth is coming from depth, not new users, so vertical video is where your budget should go by default.

REDDIT: Vertical era is coming. Reddit is testing TikTok-style video and audio playback for viral posts. This means short-form vertical content is essential, even on a text-first platform. Or, what was once one. Think about how your written wins could become watchable ones.

CHATGPT: OpenAI appears to be building chatbot-native ads that don’t just display, they launch AI agents to act for the user. That’s a big shift. Rather than nudging users to click, these ads could kick off tasks like booking, buying, or comparing right inside the chat. Phew.

ICYMI, last time we looked at the Bystander Effect.

The “Close enough” Crew.
