These two just can’t stay out of trouble in Europe, can they?
Don’t get too personal: Meta needs to limit the reach of personalized ads on Facebook in the European Union, or face new fines.
Before Meta can deliver personalized ads in the EU, the company will have to gain users’ permission… a big item for the to-do list.
Nothing new: Meta is already trying to appeal the whopping $425M fine it received from the EU for requiring users to accept personalized ads on its platforms.
The fine is a win for privacy but a hit to Meta’s ad business—which still hasn’t fully recovered from previous years.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s data protection watchdog recently fined companies for exporting European users’ data to the US and breaching privacy laws via Google Analytics (GA).
… And the fines are nothing to sniff at. One was over $1.1M and another was $30k. Ouch.
Also, four companies received warnings for breaching GDPR. The Swedish government issued an official statement on why they must stop using GA.
So if you’re in the EU and you use GA or Meta, pay close attention to your country’s laws.
Data privacy protection is getting serious… and for better or worse, it’s going to affect the tools you use.
