The FTC’s rule prohibiting fake online reviews is officially live

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is keeping it real…

It’s officially not OK to publish fake reviews online.

The FTC activated the ban on Monday, meaning penalties can be issued against violations.

So from now on, you shouldn’t:

  • Buy reviews.
  • Misuse social media—like buying following or artificially inflating views.
  • Misrepresent a customer’s experience in your reviews.
  • Suppress negative reviews.
  • Use AI-generated reviews.

Also, you can’t use intimidation tactics, such as threats, to manipulate reviews in your favor.

Hopefully these new rules make online shopping safer for customers and ensure fair marketplaces.

They might also make your competitor research a little more illuminating, at least in the long run.
