Push notifications: Should you use them?

It seems like every e-commerce store has come out with its own mobile app. 

Even popular cafes like Joe & The Juice have jumped on the train.

… But is this a trend your store needs to hop on?

Maybe. After all, it’s a totally free way of meeting your customers where they are: On their phones. 

The main challenges you’ll face are:

  • Building the app, and
  • Getting your customers to download it… and enable the notifications.

The most common way to get customers to download your app is to give something away for free: 

“Download the app for a free gift.” 

“Download the app for 40% off your next purchase.” 

But once they’ve downloaded it, now what? What can you actually do with these push notifications?

How to leverage push notifications?

Here are some things you can do: 

  • Promotional alerts. Notify customers about the latest sales and discounts, whether they’re planned sales or exclusive offers to people on your app. Or, create a countdown for an upcoming sale. 
  • Share new content. If you have a blog, tell your customers when you’ve published pieces. Perhaps it’s a subject they’re interested in.
  • Personalized recommendations. Suggest products from your store based on their past browsing or purchase history.
  • Re-engagement alerts. Reconnect with users who haven’t interacted with your app for a while. 
  • Transactional notifications. Provide real-time shipping and delivery updates. 

The best part?

You’re not competing with other brands like with paid advertising. 

Once they’ve downloaded your app, reaching your customers becomes much easier—and less expensive.
