Look out for the account purge

Sorry if that sounds scary. It’s not… we don’t think.

Elon Musk said Twitter is “purging” inactive accounts on the platform to free up a large number of desired usernames and handles.

Which accounts, exactly? Musk said Twitter will remove accounts that have had no activity for several years, so recently idle accounts won’t be touched.

… Yet.

Idle birds: Twitter hasn’t revealed when—or how—new users will be able to get ahold of old usernames.

At one point the platform considered selling usernames through online auctions, but Musk hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

He did say that there are over 1.5B inactive accounts though…

… So don’t be surprised if your follower count drops. If you suddenly lose several followers, at least you’ll know why.

On the bright side, creators and brands that couldn’t get desired usernames because they were already taken by other accounts may finally get what they want.

Hooray for that!
