Perplexity gets ads, and Microsoft’s Copilot reveals 2024 usage trends

Guess who’s walking into 2025 with a new label?

I spy Sponsored: It seems Perplexity is now running ads above commonly asked questions by showing a promoted article with a “Sponsored” label.

We’re probably going to start seeing this kind of placement on more and more platforms in 2025 and beyond, so… get really good at crafting question headlines, among other things.

Not your Spotify Wrapped: Microsoft Edge recently reflected on the year in its 2024 Year-in-Review.

The big takeaway? Its AI tool, Copilot, is thriving—users have participated in over 10B AI-powered chats directly from the Edge browser window, mainly for auto-translating, shopping, and file sharing.

This is worth noting for two reasons:

  1. It can give you a sense of how your potential customers are using tech like this.
  2. Given Copilot’s success, it wouldn’t be surprising if Edge rolls out its own ad placements soon.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see on number two…
