Links don’t matter that much anymore, and Google’s already enforcing its site reputation abuse policy

Two reminders from Google today…

It’s not about the links: Google has said—again—that links aren’t as important as they used to be.

To be exact, Google’s Gary Illyes said the company needs “very few links to rank pages,” and implied that this will continue to be the case.

Of course, Google makes lots of statements like this, so… use your best judgment.

Don’t link to spammy sites: Also, on May 5, Google will be labeling sites that host “low-value, third-party content” as spam and treating them accordingly.

At least, that was the plan. But it seems Google has started enforcing this policy already…

Forbes blocked its coupon section using x-robots-tag: noindex directive because Google had deindexed its coupon pages, dropping visibility.

If you happen to link to any affiliate sites or third-party sources, you may review them and block any low-quality content now… or Google might do it for you.

Well… that’s not happening anymore. Instead, these features will continue to be accessible without any disruption—for now. It’s nice to have a bit…
