Facebook users rise, Threads engagement drops

We’re not at Meta’s HQ, but between celebrating a milestone and recent Threads news, we’re guessing the emotions of team Zuckerberg must be pretty mixed.

Let’s start with the milestone…

It’s nothing much, just three billion: Facebook hit 3B monthly active users, making it the first social network to do so.

Also, Meta says it’s seeing an increase in young adults on the app for the first time in years. Good sign—and something to consider for your future campaigns.

Slowing down: After a record-smashing week of signups, Threads engagement has started dropping off, according to a number of tracking firms.

Sensor Tower said the number of daily active users was down 20% and time spent on the app was down 50% on the Tuesday and Wednesday following the app’s launch.

Downloads are slowing down, too. Appfigures reports that Remini—a TikTok AI photo app—has booted Threads from the top of the App Store downloads chart.

No trespassing: Also, Meta admitted to blocking European Union users who tried to log into Threads with VPNs.

Why? To avoid potential trouble with EU regulators, of course.

So between Meta’s inability to access the EU market and the apparent slowdown in downloads and engagement, Threads might not outmuscle Twitter that easily.

But there are other cards to play: Meta is planning to release a commercial version of LLaMA, its open-open source AI model.

LLaMA would allow developers and businesses to build apps on its foundations, and would rival OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s PaLM.

Expect to see a lot of development here soon…
