If you ever think you’re past your prime, don’t worry, this should put your mind at ease.
From OAP to AAP: Google struck a deal with the Australian Associated Press (AAP) to feed its 90-year-old newswire into Gemini.
Supposedly the partnership will boost real-time accuracy and relevance in Google’s AI answers while lending credibility through AAP’s journalism. Hm…
Globally, we’re seeing a split. Some outlets like these kinds of partnerships, while others are fighting AI companies in court over copyright.
Unfortunately, for almost all US publishers, traffic numbers aren’t pretty.
Nearly every top news site saw year over year declines in July. We’re talking the big boys like CNN, Fox News, and the Washington Post.
… And not just by a few percent either.
Only a handful have managed to buck the trend. Between the paywalls, changing reader habits, and AI disruption, the competition for clicks is getting brutal.
Here to save the day? In response, the IAB Tech Lab is launching AI Content Monetization Protocols to help publishers and marketers fight back.
The goal is to create tools that manage how data gets pulled in, offer payment systems based on how people actually use a service, and lock in tougher rules to stop bots.
It will be interesting to see how the IAB’s efforts—and traffic generation efforts in general—play out. Who are you betting on?
