Good SEO is still good GEO, and Google tests gaming the search experience

When you play guitar, you can strum it however you like as long as you get the chords right.

SEO is the same, apparently: According to Google’s Danny Sullivan, good SEO is good GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

In other words, just stick to “normal SEO.” Your core mission remains the same: Focus on creating unique, valuable content.

And yes, this comes as publishers report lower click-through rates despite higher impressions since AI Overviews launched. Google says it’s figuring it out.

In the meantime, Google is trying a little gamification. It’s testing a new game in its search results to encourage more searching.

When you search for topics like football or culinary, for example, you can earn a badge and start a trivia challenge.

“Playing” on multiple days unlocks milestone badges, and there are eight badges per topic, with 32 total achievements.

If users get rewarded for sticking around, could this give search a one-up over AI?
